Where to Stay in Surabaya
Your guide to the best areas and accommodation types
Surabaya splits into distinct corridors, each with its own pace. The colonial center around Genteng concentrates heritage hotels alongside Dutch-era shophouses. Coffee and batik dye drift through morning air here. Farther west, Sungkono's glass towers and the Shangri-La anchor the upscale business belt.
Gubeng suits train travelers wanting tree-lined streets and easy mid-range options. Darmo runs quieter and leafier to the south. The northern quarters of Ampel and Kembang Jepun trade hotel polish for atmosphere. Incense from the grand mosque and the clatter of old trading streets await just outside.

The colonial heart of Surabaya, where Dutch-era facades line Jalan Tunjungan. Fried tofu from street carts cuts through humid midday air. Tunjungan Plaza mall, the Balai Pemuda cultural center, and the legendary Hotel Majapahit anchor this walkable strip. First visits work well here. Surabaya's layered history sits within arm's reach.
- ✓ Walking distance to Tunjungan Plaza and Jalan Tunjungan's colonial shophouses
- ✓ Hotel Majapahit, one of Indonesia's most storied properties, is the neighborhood's landmark.
- ✓ Dense concentration of Surabayan restaurants, cafes, and the city's best rujak cingur spots.
- ✓ Well-connected by main roads and ride-share to Juanda International Airport
- ✗ Daytime traffic noise from Jalan Tunjungan can be relentless during business hours.
- ✗ Afternoon heat radiates off the asphalt. Walking without shade grows uncomfortable fast.

A residential neighborhood centered on Surabaya Gubeng train station, with wide avenues shaded by rain trees and the distant sound of train whistles setting a calmer tone than the colonial center. Mid-range hotels cluster within easy walking distance of the platforms. Gubeng works naturally for travelers arriving by train from Jakarta, Yogyakarta, or Malang.
- ✓ Surabaya Gubeng station is on foot from most hotels in the neighborhood
- ✓ Quieter streets and cooler evening air than central Genteng
- ✓ Good local restaurants along Jalan Ngagel Jaya serving Surabayan staples
- ✓ Predictable ride-share access to the airport and Tunjungan
- ✗ Fewer landmark sights within walking distance compared to the colonial center
- ✗ Surabaya's nightlife requires a short ride; Gubeng itself goes quiet after 10pm

South Surabaya's tree-lined residential corridor along Jalan Raya Darmo, where Dutch-era mansions sit alongside consulates and the smell of frangipani from garden walls mingles with birdsong drifting from Kebun Binatang Surabaya in the morning air. The pace differs entirely from the commercial center to the north. Travelers wanting Surabaya's greenest streets find reward here.
- ✓ Greenest and most walkable corridor in Surabaya with wide shaded pavements
- ✓ Surabaya Zoo, the oldest and largest in Indonesia, is a short walk from most hotels.
- ✓ Calmer traffic than central Surabaya, on residential side streets
- ✓ Well-regarded local restaurants along Jalan Adityawarman serve Surabayan and Javanese food.
- ✗ Longer ride to Surabaya's northern heritage sites at Ampel and Kembang Jepun
- ✗ Hotel density is lower than the colonial center. On-arrival comparison options remain limited.

Surabaya's western business spine along Jalan Mayjen Sungkono, where cool marble-floored lobbies and the steady hum of powerful air conditioning define the streetscape alongside glass office towers. This is where Surabaya's corporate visitors sleep. They eat at hotel restaurants. They end evenings at rooftop bars looking south over the city's illuminated sprawl.
- ✓ Surabaya's highest concentration of 5-star hotels anchored by the Shangri-La
- ✓ Clean, wide roads with more predictable traffic flow than the colonial center
- ✓ Ciputra World mall directly accessible for high-end dining and shopping
- ✓ Short, consistent drive south toward Juanda International Airport
- ✗ The neighborhood has a corporate sterility that feels removed from Surabaya's street life.
- ✗ Dining options skew heavily toward hotel restaurants and mall food courts

Surabaya's Arab Quarter, clustered around Masjid Ampel, one of the oldest mosques on Java and a pilgrimage site for Wali Songo devotees. The air carries mingled scents of frankincense, dates, and fried snacks from the narrow lanes of Jalan Ampel where traders have operated for five centuries. Accommodation is basic. The cultural immersion available in this corner of Surabaya is unlike anywhere else in the city.
- ✓ Masjid Ampel, dating to the 15th century, is steps from local guesthouses
- ✓ Surabaya's most atmospheric souk-style market. Vendors sell dates, abayas, and prayer beads from crowded stalls.
- ✓ Authentic street food. Soto Madura and lontong kupang come from roadside stalls. No pretense.
- ✓ A local neighborhood. No tourist artificiality. No inflated souvenir pricing either.
- ✗ Hotel stock is limited. Basic guesthouses and budget properties only. Full-service accommodation requires a short drive.
- ✗ Narrow lanes. Ampel makes a poor base for travelers needing frequent long-distance commutes.

Surabaya's Chinatown along Jalan Kembang Jepun and the old harbor trading streets. The smell of roasting peanuts and incense from Hok A Bio temple hangs in the humid air. Red lanterns sway overhead in the evening breeze. The rattle of goods trolleys echoes off intact Straits Chinese shophouse facades. Budget guesthouses dominate. The atmosphere is irreplaceable.
- ✓ Surabaya's oldest trading streets. Intact Straits Chinese shophouse architecture survives here.
- ✓ Hok A Bio and Boen Bio temples are within walking distance
- ✓ The best nasi campur in Surabaya. Freshly grilled bak kwa too. Both cluster on these streets.
- ✓ Photogenic at night. Red lanterns illuminate the narrow lane. Temple incense thickens the air.
- ✗ Mid-range and luxury hotels are sparse. Polished options require a short drive into Genteng.
- ✗ Daytime delivery traffic and trading noise starts well before sunrise

Eastern Surabaya's knowledge corridor runs along the Middle East Ring Road. Home to Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember and Universitas Airlangga's science campus. Newer hotels line the MERR highway. Cleaner air. Wider roads than the city center. The smell of petrichor from the Kali Surabaya canal reaches the neighborhood during the wet season. A practical base for visitors with business at eastern universities or Surabaya's tech parks.
- ✓ Modern hotels at rates below their city-center equivalents. Comparable room standards.
- ✓ Wide, newer roads with smoother traffic flow compared to central Surabaya
- ✓ Pakuwon Mall and Galaxy Mall accessible. Dining, grocery shopping, and entertainment available.
- ✓ Fast access to Juanda International Airport via the MERR highway
- ✗ Surabaya's heritage districts and Chinatown require a longer commute from the east.
- ✗ Street-level energy is considerably lower than central or northern Surabaya

Surabaya's northern coastal edge. The Java Sea turns the horizon silver at dawn. The smell of salt and grilled fish from the Kenjeran seafood market fills the air by mid-morning. Kenjeran Park's colorful Chinese pagodas rise above the waterfront. Local families pack the beach on weekends. Accommodation is sparse and mostly basic. The sea breeze and coastal setting are unlike anywhere else in Surabaya.
- ✓ Direct access to Kenjeran Beach. Surabaya's freshest seafood grilled over open charcoal at waterfront stalls.
- ✓ Kenjeran Park and the Chinese temple pagodas are walkable from nearby guesthouses.
- ✓ Much lower accommodation rates than Surabaya's central and business districts
- ✓ The coolest evening breeze in Surabaya blows off the Java Sea after sunset
- ✗ Polished mid-range and luxury hotel options are very limited in the immediate coastal area.
- ✗ Long commute to Surabaya's business districts. Sungkono and Genteng.

Accommodation Types
From budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels, here's what's available.
Marriott, Accor, and Shangri-La flags anchor Genteng and Sungkono. Pools. Business centers. Consistent English-speaking service.
Best for: Business travelers and visitors wanting predictable standards. Daily housekeeping. Concierge services.
Hotel Majapahit and Bumi Surabaya City Resort preserve Dutch colonial architecture. Garden pools that no modern Surabaya build can replicate.
Best for: Travelers who want architecture, history, and garden grounds built into the accommodation itself. Not added as surface decoration.
Amaris, POP!, and Fave offer clean air-conditioned rooms across multiple Surabaya neighborhoods. They charge a fraction of what international chains demand.
Best for: Solo travelers, backpackers, and domestic visitors prioritize value and a predictable minimum standard. They sacrifice facilities and space.
Several Surabaya complexes in Gubeng and Sukolilo offer monthly-rate apartment units. Kitchen access suits extended stays.
Best for: Expats, long-term business visitors, and families need a kitchen, laundry access, and more space. Standard hotel rooms fall short.
Booking Tips
Insider advice to help you find the best accommodation.
Hotel Majapahit fills quickly around Indonesian national holidays. Idul Fitri and Idul Adha breaks drive domestic leisure travel to Surabaya. The hotel's limited room count reaches capacity weeks in advance.
The Shangri-La and Grand Mercure drop corporate room rates substantially on Friday and Saturday nights. Business travel demand evaporates. Leisure guests access the same pool, spa, and dining at notably lower rates than midweek.
The Mercure Grand Mirama and Novotel Surabaya rarely sell out outside peak periods. These neighborhoods offer the most reliable last-minute options in Surabaya. Comfort and central location remain intact.
Ampel and Kenjeran guesthouses operate on small inventories. Budget travelers targeting these cultural neighborhoods should book at least two weeks ahead. Even Surabaya's off-peak periods fill fast.
When to Book
Timing matters for both price and availability.
Book six to eight weeks ahead for June to August and the December holiday period. Genteng and Sungkono luxury hotels fill first. Mid-range properties in Gubeng and Darmo follow quickly.
April, May, September, and October offer the best availability and rates in Surabaya. Two weeks notice suffices for all but the most popular heritage properties.
January to March is the rainy season and Surabaya's quietest period for tourism. Last-minute mid-range rates can fall well below rack price. Weekends in Darmo and Gubeng see particular discounts.
Two weeks ahead covers most of Surabaya's hotels for most of the year. Double that window for Idul Fitri, August school holidays, and New Year. Domestic travel to Surabaya peaks sharply then.
